When I think about the history of Islam and what the prophet Mohammed – peace be upon him – or any other prophet went through, I draw strength. My parents in South Africa never thought that they’d see the fall of the regime, or that Nelson Mandela would be out of jail and be the first democratically-elected leader. I keep that in mind. I try to draw inspiration from people who have contributed to our world– Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, or Mother Theresa amongst others. They don’t have to be Muslim. When Ramadan comes, I think of those who went before me; what they went through. I think it is not hard for me, I don’t have it so hard – I have housing, food, air conditioning – so many luxuries, so much.
